Seems the devils are drooling to hall with these "look who we signed Taylor...please stay" when reality is he is prob headed to the rangers soon as he can...trade him at the deadline if he can stay healthy for a prospect and a second round pick... |

Hall will not be worth the money for the downside of his career. He is going to look to get paid ($10 million) off two years ago, but that was the apex. Similar to the Mets and deGrom (I know different sports) but I think the Mets actually did the right size deal.
8 & 80 for Hall will look like Clarkson and Hoilk's deals did (elsewhere) if the Devils sign him.
Deal him know for a as much as you can get. There are enough places for the franchise to improve that they don't need to match in star power. A second line wing, a 2/3 defenseman and a pick, if the players are all in mid-20s will be better off in long haul. |

While I'm a big fan of Hall's, I don't think this is wrong. Seeing the kind of return Colorado got from Duchene, you could build an amazing support structure for the Hischier and Hughes era with that kind of trade. Boston and Anaheim come to mind as targets for such a trade. Might be able to pull a Debrusk or Rakell/Kase along with prospect and pick combo outta them and set yourselves up very nicely.
To his credit, though, Hall is a smart player that's very keen on winning so I wouldn't doubt his willingness to take a discount if it meant joining a contender that has proven to be as forward-thinking and adaptable as he is. I honestly think he'd sign with a team like San Jose or Colorado (if they take off this year) at a shocking discount. |

My question is why aren't the other RFAs signing? |

I don’t know about Clarkson bad, but yeah, you will probably be paying 10 mil for a 40-50 point forward for the last 3 years of his contract. If the Devils are smart, they front load it and make the early part heavy on signing bonus so trading the contract after year 5 or so will be easier if the relationship sours. |

Yeah but $10M in 7 years with be almost 3rd line money. I’m fine with 8 years and $80m. I’d even go 11 per year |

Good article Todd. I question if we even inquired about Ferland as well. At the price/term he signed for I’d rather have him over Simmonds |

I don’t disagree. I think it’s important to keep Hall, especially for the development of guys like Hughes and Nico. Having Hall, Palmieri, Zajac around will help. Of course Hall has to want to stay. If he doesn’t commit soon, you have to entertain trading him. Can’t afford to get Parise’d on this one. |

We’ve won the lotto two of the last three years and got Smith the one year we didn’t win. I’m not eager to throw away four first round picks for any player at this point. |

hm. but trading Hall fixes the money situation paying Marner would create.. and Marner is so so young, and so far, without significant injury in 3 seasons: 77, 82, 82gp.
We would just be really thin on the LW and reallly missing Hall on that top line LW. But we're talking 5 years here. It's not an easy decision. Hall is a helluva player, and we can win with him.
Bratt-Hischier-Marner
Boqvist-Hughes-Palmieri
Zacha-Zajac-Simmonds
Wood-Coleman-Anderson/Bastian
quite a falloff from having Hall on the left side. |

I don’t know about 4 first round draft picks, that would be the case correct?
I like the 8 year ten mill heavy front loaded option.
You also have to think that he will not have to carry the team like he has so this will take a load off his mind and body.
I just spent a 150 on his Jersey so it would suck. lol.

The Simmonds signing does seem to point to the fact that they are done adding, which is unfortunate because Bratt/Simmonds riding shotgun with Hughes is an underwhelming combination to me (not a ton of shooting on that line).
Absent any more additions, in my mind the most important player to watch this year will be Blackwood. We know Hughes is going to be good, and also what they are getting out of their other top guys. A lot of their future is riding on if he is going to be a high-quality starter in this league. For him to take a step back this year and not start to separate himself from Schneider would be a tough pill to swallow. |

I'm curious as to why you think Simmonds means they're done adding, considering Shero has strongly hinted that they aren't. Not saying you're wrong, but I wanna know the reasoning. |

They have 21 million in space with Hughes to sign an ELC and Butcher, Zacha, Mueller and Carrick to sign as RFAs. He may be done adding UFAs other than maybe some PTOs, but he could very well still add through trades. |

Shattenkirk most likey traded. Do some research yourself. Now you know and knowing is half the battle. |

I forgot which podcast I was listening to, but if the Leafs offered Marner for Hall straight up, TAKE IT RAY and give Marner is 10.5 mil (or whatever Matthews is getting). I know this is a ridiculous trade that will never happen, but I'm so shocked there would be Devil fans who would be against this.
Anyway, the Devils need to keep and pay Hall. Sure the contract might go south at the tail end of the contract but giving Hall the contract will show commitment to the fans. The last thing I want to see is the Devils always trading players for draft picks and trying to "rebuild." We'll be Edmonton East at that point. |
